It's time for another beer review, and this week I have for you another beer from Brooklyn Brewery, East India Pale Ale. Now, this has a fairly low IBU rating at just 47, so I'm not going into this expecting a very bitter pale ale. It does clock in at a generous 6.9% ABV however, so this is a good drinking beer. Beer advocate rating on this one is 82.
With the obligatory stats out of the way, on with the taste testing!
Popping the cap, the smell is that of primarily fruity, citrusy hops, hints of grapefruit and other citrus fruits such as orange or tangerine. Leading strong as with both the brewery's other beers that I've reviewed.
EIPA pours with a small light coloured head which quickly dissipates, leaving a little lacing. The beer itself is a lightish orange colour, nothing too special there.
Tasting this one, the first thing I noticed is the bitter hops mixed with some maltiness which leaves a slightly citrusy flavour you get from the smell in the aftertaste. I can't say it tastes anywhere near as fruity as it smells, which isn't too bad, but the slight disparity between the nose and the taste took a couple of sips to get used to. In the mouth it feels almost like a lager, there's a fair bit of carbonation, almost too much for my liking, which I would say is this beer's only downside. It's also not nearly as bitter as other IPAs I've had which is good for people who aren't really into IPA or want a "beginner's" IPA.
I don't know if I'd rush out and buy this one again, it's definitely a good beer, that much I can tell you, it's just that I've had better in my time. It's definitely one you should try if you see it and are curious, but it's not nearly as good as the two seasonal Brooklyn Brewery beers I've tried so far. I'd like to try some of their other all year rounders though definitely, and since I've ran out of all the Brooklyn beers I had in the house, I'd better get out and buy some more (I suggest you do the same)!
Thanks for reading and if you have any comments then please do post them below, if you'd like to recommend a beer for me to try (it doesn't have to be a good one if you'd rather see my take on a terrible beer) then post that below and I'll check it out and try to buy some if I can.
