Yep, it's once again beer time and I'm taking a look at Iron Maiden's Trooper ale by Robinson's brewery. As a big fan of Iron Maiden I've been wanting to try this beer for a while and see what it's like but for whatever reason I've never got around to it. That is, until I saw it on the shelf in the supermarket recently and thought, "why not?"
Son onto the beer stats and things. Trooper weighs in at a reasonable 4.7% ABV, so not the strongest beer I've tried on here, but far from the weakest beer I've ever tasted. It gets a healthy beer advocate score of 77.
To get myself in the right state of mind for this one, naturally I grabbed my Piece of Mind record, skipped to track 5 and blasted a bit of good old "The Trooper" while I drank my Trooper ale.
Opening her up, I got the malty, fruity scents, light sweetness and that's about all. There's not a lot to excite your nose with this one.
It poured a brown/coppery colour and had a very thin head which very quickly disappeared, very light lacing.
As for the taste, well... there's a light maltiness to the flavour and the slight sweetness of the fruits I mentioned in the smell, but apart from that I didn't get a lot more flavour from it unfortunately. The mouth feel was that of light carbonation almost flat tasting, but not quite. There's not a lot of depth to the flavour or feel of this one, quite thin tasting.
I have to say, I'm actually disappointed in this one, which is a real shame. I was hoping for something in here to stand out at least a little, but here we have a very thin tasting, average beer. I wouldn't necessarily call it bad, but I don't think I'd clamour for another glass of this with the amount of choice in beer there is out there. I could drink this again, though I probably wouldn't choose to.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to listen to some Iron Maiden to remind myself why I like them so much, because apart from the great label the bottle has, this beer does nothing for their reputation.
Don't forget you can follow me on twitter @smegzilla for up to the minute updates when the site gets updated, and also post any comments in the box below, I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on the things I talk about here on the site/blogs.
Until next time, happy drinking!
