Yes, it's time once again for me to take a look and have a good old tasting session with another beer. This time we have yet a chocolate and coffee stout from Scottish brewery BrewDog. This beer sits at a robust 10% ABV, the same as the Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout I recently reviewed.
Popping the top off this beer almost instantly gave me the whiff of lovely dark cocoa beans and a slight nuttiness in the aromas, with a little of the alcohol coming through in the scent.
As I poured this into my glass I noticed this beer is thick, pouring more like a thin syrup than a beer. The colour is black - and I mean black - as night. You couldn't shine a torch through this beer, it's that dark. I got a good thumb's width of a glorious dark caramel coloured head on the pour, which stuck around for a good while, leaving only a slight lacing in it's wake.
Now I said this beer pours thick, and it also feels fairly thick in the mouth, but very silky smooth and creamy almost. The dark toasty, malty flavour got to my tongue first, followed by the strong taste of the alcohol, subsiding into a light coffee/cocoa flavour with hints of some fruitiness, perhaps raisins or other such dark fruits. I wouldn't say this was a thirst quenching beer, but it's very nice to just sip on, relax and enjoy in the evening.
At the time of writing this article, this beer has a rating of 88 on the Beer Advocate site, which definitely attests to how tasty it is. It's definitely not for everyone though, especially those who don't like their booze to taste boozy, since this is a strong beer that pulls no punches. I'd definitely give this one a shot if you're interested, I'd not rate it quite as highly as I would the Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, but this is definitely a close contender.
If you've tasted this beer or have anything to say, feel free to leave a comment below, I'd love to hear what you think. Also if you have any suggestions for future food or drink reviews, leave those in the comment box and I'll be sure to take note of anything suggested. Thanks for reading and happy drinking!
